Story

A quiet lake fills the foreground, mirroring steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks beneath a clouded sky. This oil painting dates from 1867 and was created by Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902), a German-American painter associated with the Hudson River school. The piece entered the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as a gift given in memory of Juliet Pierpont Morgan, offering a lasting view of rugged, elevated wilderness rendered with careful attention to light and atmosphere.
