Story
A towering Alpine scene unfolds with a glacial lake nestled among evergreen trees in the foreground, while misty peaks rise beneath a clouded sky. The composition captures the layered contrast between dark woodland and the pale, distant mountains. Albert Bierstadt painted this oil work in 1858, and it now belongs to the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum as a gift. Bierstadt, who lived from 1830 to 1902, was associated with the Hudson River school and also created North Dome, Yosemite Valley. The sense of scale in the painting draws attention to how small the trees appear against the towering, fog-wrapped summits, emphasizing the vastness of the terrain. The water's still surface reflects the surrounding peaks, adding a quiet depth to the overall arrangement of natural elements within the frame.
