Story
Blocks of yellow, red, blue, green, and black stack and overlap in a vertical rhythm, breaking the scene into fragmented geometric shapes that still read as a towering urban view. The composition suggests the rise of structures and crossings pressed together into one dense, angular field. This painting, called On Brooklyn Bridge, was made in 1917 by Albert Gleizes in oil, and it is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Gleizes, a French artist who lived from 1881 to 1953, worked within Salon Cubism. Notice how the sharp planes of color pull the eye upward, echoing the climbing lines of cables and towers rather than depicting them directly.
