Story

A young girl appears in a close portrait, her green hat decorated with orange flowers set against a deep red backdrop. Bold color fields and strong black outlines simplify her features into flat, striking shapes. The piece was made in oil on cardboard in 1910. Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941), a German artist associated with Expressionism, created this striking character study.
