Story
A young boy sits quietly in a chair, his reddish-brown hair catching the light, dressed in a gray-blue jacket layered over darker clothing. His head leans against his hand, and the muted backdrop keeps the focus on his face and posture. The oil painting dates to 1919 and is held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It entered the collection through a gift given in memory of William Ray Adams. Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) worked within modern art, and among his notable works is a frontal portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne. One detail worth noticing is the quiet weight of the boy's resting head, which gives the whole composition a sense of stillness and introspection despite its simple setting and limited palette of tones.
