Story

A seated child wears a crimson gown with gathered shoulders, resting near a spotted companion dog set against a deep, shadowy backdrop. The dog's tan and white coat stands out gently in the dim setting. Painted in oil in 1835, the piece came to its collection through the Daniel J. Terra Collection. Ammi Phillips, an American painter who lived from 1788 to 1865, created portraits of this kind during his lifetime.
