Story
A dark-clad man gathers with four children and a pair of dogs beneath a rocky overhang, its mouth glowing with pale yellow light beyond them. The grouping suggests a pause inside shadow, facing an open brightness ahead. Arthur Bowen Davies painted this scene in oil in 1905, now held by The Phillips Collection. Davies, born in 1862 and died in 1928, worked within the Ashcan School in the United States.
