Story

A garden scene unfolds beneath a sky heavy with clouds, where a single figure stands among touches of red blossoms, near a cream-colored chair and a structure topped with a red roof. The composition favors soft, muted tones that blend the elements together rather than sharpening their edges. Painted in 1933, this piece uses oil on canvas laid on pulpboard, and it is held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The artist, Clarice Beckett (1887–1935), was an Australian painter associated with Tonalism. Worth noticing is how the red roof and the scattered red flowers stand out as the only vivid notes against the otherwise soft, overcast palette, drawing the eye through the garden toward the quiet presence of the lone figure near the pale chair.
