Story
Twisted olive trunks curve and bend across the foreground, their branches framing a glimpse of a coastal town resting beneath a stretch of blue sea in the distance. The gnarled bark and looping limbs create an irregular screen through which the sunlit buildings and water appear softened and remote. This oil painting, titled Bordighera, was made in 1884 and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Garden at Sainte-Adresse. One detail worth noticing is how the dense, twisting shapes of the trees contrast with the open calm of the sea and sky behind them, drawing the eye from tangled wood toward the quiet horizon beyond.
