Story
A field of oats spreads out beneath a soft, hazy sky, scattered with small red poppies that lead the eye toward a line of trees in the distance, while dark foliage edges the scene on the right. This painting, titled Champ d'avoine, was made in 1890 by Claude Monet using oil, and it is held at the Harn Museum of Art, where it entered the collection as a gift from Michael A. Singer. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter associated with Impressionism. Looking closely, the contrast between the warm red poppy accents and the muted gold and green tones of the oat field gives the composition a quiet sense of depth and movement, as if a breeze were passing gently through the grass toward the trees beyond.
