Story
A quiet river scene unfolds with the Seine curving past the village of Vétheuil, its church tower rising in the distance against a backdrop of soft green hills. Along the bank, patches of field and brush fill the foreground, while a sky full of rounded, bright clouds stretches above the water. This oil landscape was painted in 1879 and is held today at the Musée d'Orsay. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism and known for Haystacks, captured the countryside with a loose, atmospheric touch. One detail worth noticing is how the reflections of the clouds and hills seem to melt into the surface of the river, blurring the line between sky and water in a way that gives the whole scene a gentle, drifting calm.
