The Beach at Sainte-Adresse

Story

A wide stretch of sand opens onto the water at Sainte-Adresse, where fishing barks rest near the shoreline and sailboats drift farther out on the waves. Figures move along the beach beneath a sky filled with clouds, while a cluster of seaside buildings lines the distance. The scene belongs to the genre of marine art, capturing the mood of the coast rather than a single dramatic event. Claude Monet (1840–1926) painted this oil work in 1867, and it is now held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Monet, a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Impression, Sunrise. One detail worth noticing is the quiet range of blue, white, and earth tones that unify the sand, sea, and sky, giving the whole composition a soft, atmospheric calm despite the activity of boats and strolling figures along the shore.
