Story
Slender trunks rise through a stand of trees, their bark catching light while a carpet of green undergrowth spreads beneath them. Overhead, patches of pale blue and white sky break through the leafy canopy, suggesting a quiet, sunlit woodland moment. This oil painting, titled View of Bennecourt, was created in 1887 by Claude Monet and now belongs to the collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, having come to the museum as a gift. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926 and worked as a French painter, became a central figure of Impressionism, a movement known for capturing fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Looking closely, the way the sky fragments between the trunks draws the eye upward, giving the scene a sense of openness despite the density of the forest around it.
