Story

Across the surface of a pond, water lilies drift among reflections of blue and green, their pink and yellow blooms scattered loosely through the composition. The water fills nearly the whole canvas, giving a sense of looking down into shifting color rather than toward a horizon. Painted in oil in 1914, the work is by Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, now held at the Musée de l'Orangerie.
