Story

A tree with sagging, drooping branches dominates the scene, rendered in yellows, greens, and browns that stand out against a muted backdrop. The sagging limbs appear to pour downward, filling the composition with loose, textured strokes. This oil painting was created in 1918 by Claude Monet, a French painter and graphic artist associated with Impressionism, whose notable works include Haystacks and Impression, Sunrise. The piece belongs to the Kimbell Art Museum.
