Story

A quiet city square at night fills the composition, its tall buildings looming over an empty street while a comet streaks across the dark sky above. The scene is rendered in black ink on thin ivory mulberry laid paper, created as a linocut in 1932. The piece is the work of Dorrit Black (1891–1951), an Australian artist, and entered the Art Gallery of New South Wales through a purchase.

Where it works
