Story
A harbor unfolds in simplified shapes, with several arched bridges spanning the water alongside boats and clustered buildings. The composition favors muted greens, blues, browns, and earthy tones that give the scene a quiet, cohesive mood rather than sharp detail. Titled The bridge, this is an oil on canvas on board completed in 1930, now held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. It entered the collection through the artist's own bequest in 1951. Dorrit Black (1891–1951) was an Australian painter whose approach here reduces the harbor's structures and vessels to geometric forms. One detail worth lingering on is how the repeated arches of the bridges echo across the composition, creating a rhythm that ties the water, boats, and buildings into a single, balanced arrangement of curved and angular forms.
