Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand

Story

Four young girls gather closely, dressed in somber coats and headwear, set before a warm golden-brown backdrop with a pale fence visible behind them. The composition is quiet and still, the figures grouped tightly together. This oil painting was created in 1903 by Edvard Munch (1863–1944), a Norwegian artist associated with Expressionism and Symbolism. Munch is also known for Death and the Child. The work is held at the Munch Museum.
