Story

A city square comes alive with angular towers and crowded buildings, rendered in bold blues, purples, and greens, with small figures moving through the open plaza. This is an oil painting made in 1926 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938), a German artist associated with Expressionism. The piece entered the Minneapolis Institute of Art as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. John Cowles.
