Story
A tabletop composition brings together a teapot, a cluster of cups, and loosely draped cloth, set against a surface marked with repeating pattern. The palette moves through black, white, yellow, and red, giving the arrangement a crisp, decorative energy. This oil painting, titled Still Life (The Grey Fan), was completed in 1920 and is held today by the National Galleries of Scotland. Its maker, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883–1937), was a Scottish painter associated with the Scottish Colourists and with Post-impressionism. Worth lingering on is the way the fabric folds catch the light, their creases echoing the geometry of the patterned tabletop beneath the china, so that cloth and surface seem to answer one another across the composition.
