Story

A heavy black rectangle sits drawn across pages of old telephone book paper, with a thick horizontal black stripe cutting through the lower portion of the sheet. The yellowed, text-covered ground peeks out around the black marks, giving the composition a worn, document-like feel. The piece is gouache on telephone book paper, made in 1951 by Franz Kline (1910–1962), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism and action painting.
