Story
A tumbling waterfall cascades beside a mill in this scene, where the artist breaks the structure into fractured planes of blue, yellow, orange, and red, with pale streams of fabric-like water pouring past a crimson wheel and clustered buildings. The painting dates to 1913, was made in oil, and is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter associated with Expressionism, also known for his work Blue Horse I. The sharp contrast between the cool blues of the architecture and the warm red of the wheel draws the eye toward the center of the composition, where the fragmented shapes suggest motion and sound rather than a literal depiction of the mill itself.
