The Sheep

Story

A sheep appears broken into angular, faceted shapes, its body rendered through patches of blue, green, yellow, pink, and red that push the figure toward abstraction. The animal dissolves into these overlapping planes, so color and geometry carry as much weight as the creature itself. This oil composition was made in 1913 by Franz Marc (1880–1916), a German painter associated with Expressionism, whose piece is held at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
