Story

A towering volcano releases smoke and fire above a wide river valley and a still lake, while the sky glows with golden light under heavy brown and orange clouds at dusk. The composition balances the mountain's violence against the calm water below, suggesting both grandeur and threat. Painted in oil in 1862, this landscape reflects the Hudson River school tradition, a style associated with American painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900).

Where it works

A landscape suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
