Story

A snow-capped volcano rises in the distance beyond palm trees, a waterfall, and travelers gathered in the foreground, with the whole scene washed in earth tones and greens. Frederic Edwin Church painted this oil work in 1855, aligning with the Hudson River school tradition of landscape painting. The piece entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through a museum purchase funded by the Hogg Brothers Collection, a gift of Miss Ima Hogg, by exchange. Church, born in 1826 and died in 1900, was an American painter.
