Story
Crumbling columns and fragments of classical architecture rise above thick vegetation, overlooking a stretch of coastline beneath heavy, dramatic clouds rendered in warm earth tones. The composition sets ancient ruins against open water and sky, giving the sense of nature slowly taking over an old built structure. This piece, titled Syria - Ruins by the Sea, was painted in 1873 in oil by Frederic Edwin Church, and it is held today at the Reading Public Museum, having entered the collection through museum purchase. Church, born in 1826 and died in 1900, worked within the Hudson River school tradition of landscape painting. One detail worth noticing is how the warm, earthy palette unites the weathered stonework with the surrounding land and sea, blurring the line between the man-made ruins and the wild growth that surrounds them under the shifting clouded sky.
