Story
A woman wearing a blue riding habit and a wide-brimmed hat is seated atop a brown horse, posed within a green countryside scene that includes trees and a building visible in the distance. The horse stands calmly beneath her, its coat catching light against the muted tones of the setting. This oil painting, titled The Countess of Coningsby in the Costume of the Charlton Hunt, was completed in 1760 and is held today at the Yale Center for British Art. The artist, George Stubbs, painted animals and riders with close attention to anatomy and form. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the rider's crisp blue habit and the soft greens of the landscape behind her, which draws the eye immediately to her figure and the horse beneath her.
