Story
A row of Victorian houses lines a grassy slope above a wooden fence, with a sandy beach leading down to blue water dotted with sailboats under a pale sky. This oil painting, titled Regatta at Trouville, was made in 1884 and belongs to the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art. Its creator, Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894), was a French painter associated with Impressionism, whose notable work Paris Street; Rainy Day remains well known. One detail worth noticing is how the pale tone of the sky meets the water, letting the scattered white sails stand out against the calm blue surface below the row of houses.
