Story

A sturdy railroad bridge, supported by stone pillars, stretches across a river, with green banks rising beyond it under a wide blue sky. The water lies calm beneath the structure, reflecting the quiet light of the day. This oil painting was completed in 1885 and is held at the Brooklyn Museum. Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French artist associated with Impressionism, also known for his painting Paris Street; Rainy Day. One detail worth noticing is the way the stone pillars anchor the composition, giving the bridge a sense of weight against the openness of the sky and water around it.
