Story
A small sailboat glides across open water while the silhouette of Venice stretches along the horizon beneath a glowing sky, all built from tiny strokes of blue, yellow, and white. The scene unfolds in soft dabs of color that shimmer rather than blend, giving the water and sky a quiet vibration of light. This oil painting, titled Sunset on the Lagoon, Venice, was created in 1903 and now belongs to the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Its maker, Henri Edmond Cross (1856–1910), was a French artist associated with Neo-impressionism, the movement that embraced pointillist technique to capture atmosphere through color. Looking closely, the viewer can notice how the distant skyline seems to dissolve into the luminous haze, as if the city itself were made of light rather than stone.
