Story
Two figures in striped clothing leap into the air to reach a red ball, set against a backdrop of trees and a white fence. Their stances mirror each other, giving the small scene a sense of motion caught in midair. The composition is painted in oil and dates to 1908, held today at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. It is attributed to Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French painter associated with naïve art and primitivism, whose notable works include The Dream. Worth noticing is how the bold stripes of the players stand out sharply against the flat greenery behind them, giving the whole scene a decorative, almost toy-like clarity despite its outdoor setting and the simple geometry of the fence line stretching across the background.
