Story
A quiet river scene opens with tall poplars lining the bank, their slender trunks rising against a sky filled with soft clouds. Sailboats drift along the water, their white sails catching light, while buildings cluster along the far shore in muted earth tones. The palette moves gently between green, blue, and brown, giving the whole scene a calm, layered stillness. This view of the Quai d'Asnières was painted in 1902 in oil and now belongs to the Barnes Foundation. Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French painter associated with naïve art, also created The Dream. One detail worth noticing is how the poplar trunks repeat in a steady vertical rhythm, anchoring the composition against the softer, rounded shapes of the sails and clouds above them.
