Still Life

Story

A grey parrot perches atop a basket on a cluttered table, surrounded by grapes, assorted fruits, nuts, shells, and lobsters, all set against a shadowy background. The composition is rendered in oil. The work was painted by Jan Davidsz de Heem, a Dutch artist born in 1606 and died in 1684, who worked as a painter and botanical illustrator. It entered the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts through the Arthur and Margaret Glasgow Fund.

Where it works

A muted still life suited to dining rooms and dens, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
