Story

The scene opens onto Venice's waterfront, where the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore rises near the Punta della Dogana across the water. Gondolas drift close to shore, and small figures move along the stones, all wrapped in a soft haze of gold and blue light. The composition captures the city's buildings and canal traffic as part of a wider cityscape view of the lagoon. This oil on canvas work, titled The Dogano, San Giorgio, Citella, from the Steps of the Europa, was painted in 1842 by Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner, born in 1775 and died in 1851, worked within the Romanticism movement. One detail worth noticing is how the pale tones blur the line between the water's surface and the misty sky above it, giving the architecture a dissolving, luminous quality.
