Fifteen Swallowtail butterflies (Family Papilionidae) in three columns

Story

Fifteen swallowtail butterflies fill the page in three neat columns, their wings showing patterns of black, white, yellow, and brown against a pale ground. Each specimen is rendered with care, letting the viewer compare the subtle variations in markings across the group. The piece is a watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper. The artist, Marian Ellis Rowan (1848–1922), was an Australian naturalist and botanical illustrator, also known for A guide to the wild flowers.
