Story

Twenty-two butterflies fill a grid of three columns, their wings showing shades of brown, orange, black, and white set against a pale backdrop. All belong to the family Nymphalidae, each specimen rendered with care for pattern and marking. The piece is done in watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper. Marian Ellis Rowan (1848–1922) was an Australian naturalist and botanical illustrator, also known for A guide to the wild flowers.
