Story

Two soft-edged rectangles hover against a dark brown field, a rust-red block settled near the top and an olive-green one beneath it, their boundaries blurred rather than sharp. The composition is built in oil, completed in 1961. The piece belongs to abstract expressionism, through the American painter Mark Rothko (1903–1970). It entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through a museum purchase.
