Story

Horizontal bands of color stack across the canvas, their edges soft and uneven. Yellow forms the surrounding field, while bands of dark red, black, and green sit stacked above it, each shape glowing against the warmer ground. The composition is untitled, painted in 1949 in oil, and is held at the National Gallery of Art, where it entered the collection as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation. Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was an American artist associated with abstract expressionism. Looking closely, the boundaries between the bands appear slightly blurred, giving the hard geometry a quiet, breathing quality rather than a sharp, mechanical one. The layered rectangles seem to hover rather than rest flatly, creating a sense of depth within a very simple arrangement of color and shape across the surface.

Where it works

A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to media rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
