Story
A wide expanse of color fills the canvas, with a band of bright yellow stretched across the top, a deep brown field anchoring the middle, and a red-orange edge wrapping around the whole composition like a frame. This untitled oil painting was made in 1950 and is held at the National Gallery of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation. The artist, Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American painter, worked within abstract expressionism. Looking closely, the viewer can notice how the glowing border of red-orange seems to hold the darker brown mass in place, letting the yellow above feel like a quiet source of light rather than a sharp contrast.
Where it works
A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a horizontal format.
