Story

Loose, organic shapes drift across pale paper, their black ink outlines softened by patches of red and blue that seem to pool rather than sit. The forms suggest biological fragments more than recognizable objects, floating in uneven clusters. This piece was made with watercolor, pen, and black ink over graphite in 1944, by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism.

Where it works

A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to living rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
