Story

Three black rectangular bands stretch horizontally across a purple ground, each separated from the next by thin purple strips that let the background breathe between them. The dark shapes stack evenly, holding the composition in a steady, layered balance. This piece was made with acrylic and ink on wove paper in 1969 by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism, held at the National Gallery of Art.

Where it works

A cool-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and media rooms, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
