Story
Three wide bands stretch across the canvas, stacked one above another, their colors moving between coral, golden yellow, and a softened orange. The surface holds no sharp lines or figures, only these layered zones of warm hue that fill the entire picture plane. The painting was made in 1957 using oil, and it belongs to the Yale University Art Gallery, having entered its holdings through the Katharine Ordway Collection. Mark Rothko, born in 1903 and died in 1970, worked within abstract expressionism and painted other notable works such as No. 1. Looking closely, the boundaries between the three fields seem to hover rather than divide sharply, so the colors appear to breathe into one another across the surface.
