Story
A cluster of white houses with dark window openings sits beneath a tall tower, set against a deep blue sky filled with tan, angular shapes. The composition reduces the buildings to simplified geometric blocks, giving the scene a condensed, almost stacked feeling. Marsden Hartley made this piece in 1916, working in oil and charcoal on paperboard, and it is now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Alfred Stieglitz Collection. Hartley, who lived from 1877 to 1943, worked within Expressionism. The sharp tan forms pressing against the dark sky are worth lingering on, since they break the quiet rows of houses with an abrupt burst of jagged energy.
