Story

A tight arrangement of shapes fills the canvas: a cross sits at the center, surrounded by rounded sun shapes and angular wing forms, rendered in blue, red, yellow, and white. The painting was made in oil in 1914 by Marsden Hartley (1877–1943), an American artist linked to Dada and Expressionism. The piece came to its museum as a partial and promised gift from a private collection.
