Story
A quiet river bends through a dusky landscape, cattle grazing along its banks near a modest shelter, while trees stand against a sky streaked with pink light at day's end. This oil landscape, titled Winding River, Sunset, was made in 1863 by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism. The piece entered the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art through the Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund.
