In the Loge

Story

A woman dressed in black sits inside a theater box, lifting a pair of opera glasses as she looks toward the stage below. Warm brown and gold hues fill the surrounding space, suggesting the glow of theater lighting around her. The painting, titled In the Loge, was made by Mary Cassatt in 1878 using oil, and it is held at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Cassatt, who lived from 1844 to 1926, was associated with Impressionism and later painted The Child's Bath. One detail worth noticing is how the dark fabric of her clothing contrasts sharply with the softer golden tones filling the rest of the composition, drawing attention to her focused posture as she observes the performance.
