Story

A field of yellow surrounds a cluster of ocean creatures rendered in flattened, decorative shapes. Fish, jellyfish, and crustaceans intertwine, picked out with touches of red and dark outlines that give them a graphic, almost patterned quality. The piece is attributed to Paul Elie Ranson (1861–1909), a French artist associated with Symbolism, whose work also included the notable piece Witch with a black cat.
