Story
Blocky and curving shapes mingle across a pale, textured surface, rendered in red, brown, and black tones that suggest both geometry and figures caught mid-gesture. The piece was made in oil in 1937 by Paul Klee, an artist of German-Swiss background associated with the Bauhaus and with Expressionism. Klee, born in 1879 and died in 1940, also created the work Angelus Novus. The painting is held at The Phillips Collection, which acquired it in 1948.
