Story
Bands of soft, muted color stretch horizontally across the canvas, overlaid with linear patterns and small botanical symbols scattered throughout the composition. These marks suggest rows of young plants, as though the picture were a diagram of a nursery seen from above. Paul Klee made this piece in 1929, using oil over an incised gesso ground on canvas. Klee, German-Swiss (1879–1940), worked within the Bauhaus movement. The painting entered The Phillips Collection, acquired in 1930.
