Evening, The Jetty at Vlissingen

Story

A quiet harbor unfolds with sailboats resting near a long jetty, built up from countless small dots of blue, green, and beige that merge into soft light across the water and sky. This lithograph, titled Evening, The Jetty at Vlissingen, was created in 1898 and is held today at the Cleveland Museum of Art, having entered the collection as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Meals. Paul Signac (1863–1935), a French artist, worked within the pointillism movement, applying its method of separated color touches to scenes of water and coastline. Looking closely, the viewer can see how the dotted strokes never blend fully, letting the eye combine the hues into shimmering atmosphere rather than flat color, giving the harbor a sense of stillness and gentle shifting light across the jetty and sails.
